Happy Camper

October 30, 2008

We are very close to wrapping up Summa 1.1, our list of tasks for 1.1 is almost fully ticked off. In fact one item remains…

“Being able to cope with boring work” – I wonder why this issue is the last one to be addressed :-)

Really – I am a happy camper, Summa 1.1 was on a tight schedule packed with new features and rewrites of core components and it looks like we’ll ship on time. Here’s for hoping that no last-minute problems crop up. I can’t wait to write the release notes – they’re going to be pretty packed :-D

Deadline time 2

October 9, 2008

Its deadline time again. Today we’ll be releasing the new version of Statsbiblioteket’s search engine, Search. We tried to do that last week too, but had to postpone.

Today, though, we’re confident that all is well and that about 9 AM we’ll be up and running with the new system. And again, as you can tell from the photo from 7.38 AM, the office is calm.

We’ll be posting updates throughout the day.

Hooaaahhh

Update 8.40 AM

There’s a little more buzz. Some guys from another department are getting Hans on his heels. But this is standard procedure at release time.

We now also have candy courtesy of Mads.

Update 9.01 AM
We are LIVE.

All seems to work well, apart from material status. We are not quite sure why…

Photos from the minutes just before deploy:

Update 10.15 AM
We are having problems with some types of materials. Apparently this is related to the SFX server running on mars (a server) not being able to talk to debit (another server).

Update 11.15 AM
Availability bug is fixed. All is well.

Update 14.29 AM
All systems are go. Requests roll in. Only few errors. We are happy

Party!

October 8, 2008

The Web-group of the Silkeborg Libraries who recently pushed out the completely revamped, Summa-powered, website just payed us a surprise visit (their work has been nicely received btw). They brought a barrage cake and champagne with them :-)

Great work guys and girls! I hope you and, more importantly, your users will enjoy the new site.

jQuery steps up

October 7, 2008

Both Microsoft and Nokia seem to have embraced jQuery. Microsoft have incorporated the JavaScript library into Microsoft Visual Studio and ASP.NET (leaving the native support for Ajax in .net intact) and Nokia plans to include it in their WebKit and widget development platform.

We currently use the Prototype JavaScript library for the front-end here at SB. Michael has briefly tested the jQuery library on another project and he seems quite happy with it. As more and more attention draws to jQuery the development of the library will naturally accelerate. If Prototype looses the race this will in time force us to consider to switch libraries in future development and port our Prototype based script to jQuery.

The Prototype and jQuery libraries can co-exist (with some tweaking and consideration) but personally I would prefer a clean break if it comes to that.

Don’t misuse the Summa logo

October 7, 2008

In his recent post, Old School Mug, Mikkel showed us how to misuse the Summa logo on his old mug.

Here’s what happens when you do that:

Yet another Summa installation goes into production mode

October 7, 2008

The public library in Silkeborg has launched a new website complete with a new search interface powered by Summa. Their chief developer reports that they still have a few things to tweak over the next weeks but nevertheless – BIG congratulations!

Old School Mug

October 3, 2008

Not everyone can afford cool, expensive, Summa merchandise Michael. Fortunately I am a crafty young man and Michael was nice enough to post the Summa logos on our wiki :-)

Note that I deliberately pictured my mug next to an Apple mouse to make it look cool (to which item the “it” refers I leave up to you dear reader).

Summa power mug has arrived

October 3, 2008

I’ve had this summa mug made over at cafepress. When I designed it colours were great on screen. Unfortunately, the red and the purple clash too much. I guess I’ll have to refine the design.

The mug is big and nice, though and seems to keep hot liquid warm.
